Residential Windmills Are They Useful?

Residential windmills have been a major subject of discussion during the last couple of years. It is very refreshing to think of a power source that’s not only sustainable but economical too.

How a residential windmill works

A windmill consists of a generator, with a shaft attaching to it. The shaft is also attached to 3 blades that collect wind when it flows over them. When the blades gather this kinetic energy from the wind, they rotate but with little force. Much of the force is passed on to the gearbox through the shaft.

The gearbox then adjusts this force and instead of rotating at a slow speed with more force in each revolution, it rotates faster with less force. The generator – attached to the gearbox - will then convert that kinetic force into electricity using the magnetic field and copper wiring inside. The electricity is then stored in a battery.

The output of a windmill depends on the speed of wind. Higher windmill altitudes achieve greater wind speeds and therefore greater outputs. In addition, windmills at higher altitudes are less noisy.

Still, wind energy costs have drastically gone down in the last decade, so hopefully, the trend will continue in that direction.
