Living A Greener Healthier Life

Many people do not know what living a healthier life means; this is perfectly acceptable. There seems to be a plethora of unworkable standards tied to living a healthier life and, sometimes it’s just downright confusion.

Granted, there are lots of barriers to living a healthier, greener life, but it doesn’t have to be hard.

Living healthy

We can define lifestyle as a person’s way of living that reflects their choices and decisions. Living a healthy lifestyle then is when a persons choices and decisions lead to or are more inclined toward the well-being of the body and mind.

Living a healthier life comes down to personal choices. However, there seems to be a number of unrealistic notions in society that make it extremely hard for many to get started on altering their lives toward living healthier.

Precisely speaking, it has been widely intimated that a healthier life is characterized by very specific things, such as eating a certain amount of vegetables and fruits in a day, or keeping at a certain weight. While those might represent health goals, they can not be used to define a healthy life.

Living a healthier life is characterized by four basic elements - nutrition, exercise (physical activity), stress and sleep. Most people that are conscious about their health and well-being know how to use these basic elements in their lives, and that makes part of their lifestyle. There is another sad notion that failure to comply with public health guidelines constitutes to living an unhealthy life.

This is totally wrong because such guidelines only provide benchmarks, without effective education on how to achieve them. For instance, some health  guidelines stipulate keeping at a weight with ‘body mass index in the range of 18.5 to 25’, as one of the things defining a healthy life.

But there are no recommendations on how to achieve that health goal. We can then conclude that living healthier is a matter of relative choices based on the four basic elements, made at a personal level.

Living greener

We can define a green or greener life as a lifestyle that is geared toward conserving the environment. It is being more conscious of the damage that our lifestyles can cause to the environment and making efforts to reverse that trend.

We all realize that opting to live a greener life involves making some stern life changes, and the thought of this takes most people out of their comfort zones. However, when you think about it, going green can start right in front of your computer.

Most of us don’t even realize that we may indirectly be helping in the ‘living green’ campaign. For instance, when you opt to download music, its not only convenient, it also means that you’ve eliminated the need for packaging, handling and transporting of physical CDs.

Thus, living greener can really start with very subtle things in our day to day lives. If you want to make greener choices, think ‘eco friendly’ in whatever you do; from energy, water, food to utensils and electronics.

Like health, living greener should be approached in a gradient manner, rather than an ‘all or nothing’ case.
