In the past few decades, there has been a focus on making changes to improve the environment. Decades of factory
pollutants, motor emissions, construction materials and the likes have emitted poisons and toxins in the air.
These toxins have been proven to contribute to accelerated UV transmissions, cancers, and other issues.
Individuals are now evaluating how they can contribute to the betterment of society and reduce their own carbon
footprint.
In addition to considering electric cars, many are looking into what eco home improvements they can make in
their own home.
The concern for the environment is so great that the government has weighed in on the issue in regards to
homeowners. Homeowners are encouraged to make eco home improvements and are offered tax credits for doing so. But
tax incentives aren’t the only reasons for improvements.
For their own personal benefit, homeowners desire healthier environments for their families to live in. They
desire improvements like cleaner air and improved air quality, energy efficient lighting, and energy efficient
heating and cooling. There are several eco home improvements that homeowners can make.
Homeowners should test the indoor air quality in their homes by any air quality testing kit. The results will
assist you in the direction you need to go in order to improve your air quality.

For heating, homeowners can consider alternate energy sources
such as solar and wind energy. Sun and wind energy provide excellent eco friendly options because they are
naturally available in unlimited resources.
Usage of the sources for power are also more cost efficient and they do not emit harmful pollutants or toxins
into the air. Solar panels provide no moving parts so it has reduced maintenance and cost replacement costs for the
home owner.
Motion detectors or dawn to dusk lighting are easy improvements to make in a day. This allows for energy usage
from lighting only when needed and allows for the reduction in costs. Energy is not being used for outdoor lighting
all night long or when someone forgets to turn off the lights when the sun is up.
Water can be a source of waste and an area for improvement. Ensuring that water is turned off when not in use
and repairing leaky faucets is a good start. Installing low flow shower heads can preserve the amount of water the
family uses daily. Also, washing clothes in cold water can preserve the energy required to heat vast amounts of
water in the home.
High-efficiency HVAC systems will reduce the levels of greenhouse gases emitted from heating and cooling the
home. Be sure that the system is Energy Star Certified and has a high Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio (SEER) of 13
or higher. This not only ensures at tax credit, but will certify that the government deems it energy efficient.
Another common and easy improvement to make is switching to more energy efficient light bulbs. Lights are
usually used throughout a household and on a daily basis. Much of the home energy cost is attributed to lighting.
Consider replacing standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. They use up to 75% less energy and can
result in over $50 on energy savings over five to seven years.
